Sonnemann Toon Architects has been re-structured former Edwardian house in Harley Street, transforming it into a modern processing center for the private oncology clinic in London.
Revocation of a bunker and coal yard area at the rear of the building has allowed the extension of soil and sub-levels to reflect a result of chemotherapy. The six floors was not, but that requires new plants to meet modern standards of health care.
The building also includes a haematology and biochemisty lab, pharmacy, consultation space, support spaces and a new lift shaft.
The project makes extensive use of traditional materials, with a focus on wood and plaster finishes. Rubber flooring has been introduced for health and safety reasons and new low-iron glazing fitted throughout the scheme.
Interconnecting individual treatment pods were also created for the project, with walnut wood panelling to help soften the clinical environment.
“People like it because its modern but familiar at the same time. The quality of the service is matched by the quality of the environment,” says director Gary Toon.
Working within the private sector has allowed Sonnemann Toon to assume responsibility for the entire project, including the fit-out of the building.
“The private sector has more flexibility in its procurement, they don’t have standing procedures so they are able to move a little faster,” says Toon.
“Financially there is a more direct relationship. It’s almost like doing a private house where you’re dealing with individuals who bring their own personalities to the issue with their own cash on the table. There’s no washing out by committees.”
The project won the best Interior Design category in the 2007 Building Better Healthcare Awards.
