The name of the heaviness of the North West Kilmarnock Primary Care Center of neighborhood services reflects the multitude of uses within the facility £ 6m. The logistics of planning for complex projects, the southwestern city of Glasgow, was the main challenge for the architect Austin-Smith: Lord.
As well as day care centres for both nursery children and the elderly, the recently completed NWKPCNSC includes sports facilities, a GPs surgery and dental facilities, plus mental health, art and music therapy suites. Finally, the complex also includes office accommodation for health and community workers.
The added complication was the retention of two buildings on the site - a sports hall and a former clinic - and their integration into the new build scheme.,
From the main entrance, visitors turn right for the curved nursery wing, or left to the GP wing. Straight ahead provides access to the two retained buildings.
The GP wing is the most public element of a substantial new block, which also includes primary care trust consulting rooms, therapy rooms and mental health facilities. Construction is primary timber-framed.
Although the budget was not generous, the architects sort to avoid an institutional feel by bringing in as much sunlight and natural ventilation as possible, and by using strong colours in the waiting areas, colour-coded in purple, yellow and green/blue.
As the previous health centre on the site had suffered from vandalism, it was important that the local community accepted the new facility. The practice aimed to make it welcoming and as permeable as possible, with a route through the building for those on their way somewhere else, says project architect Rowland Wallace.
